How Would You Do This In Photoshop?

This illustration appeared in today's NY Times Sunday Magazine. I've been trying all afternoon to achieve the same effect in Photoshop using the photo of Charlotte Rampling (sigh!) as an example, but having no luck. When I looked closer at the NY Times article I noticed that the credits say "artwork by Michael Mapes; photograph of artwork by Stephen Lewis", so it appears that Michael Mapes may have actually cut a printed photograph into a thousand circles and stuck pins into each one. But still, it seems like this ought to be do-able in Photoshop.

My idea was to create a custom brush of several roundish shapes and then use scattering and shape dynamics to randomly scatter circular shapes across the photo, create a clipping mask from that, and add the white strokes that are present in most of the circles. (I was going to worry about the push-pins later.) But that didn't work at all... all I did was create an amorphous blob rather than hundreds of individual cirles. Now I'm not sure how to approach this without actually creating each circle one at a time, which would take forever. I'm going to keep plugging away, but I thought this might make a good challenge to see if anyone can re-create the effect.

Photoshop & The Future

Now most of us here, I can imagine are here to learn and enhance our knowledge on photoshop. Maybe you are a photographer and use photoshop to tweak your photos, or just here for social fun as a hobby.

I'm on PSG today because..?
Graphics design is a hobby of mine, and it has been for a long time. I am here today as I would like to improve on my photoshop skills (self study), and hopefully one day have a career in this sector.

Now its your turn, why are you here today?

A Question

Hi again, all.

In my search for everything photoshop, I came across this .... http://www.toolpic.com/ .

It certainly looks almost like Photoshop's interface (at least to me). I tried playing with it and looks good.

Are there limitations to what it can do compared to Photoshop?

Is this legal to use considering it looks like photoshop and exists freely in the internet?

What Do You Call This Process? Need Help Converting Photo Into This ??

Hello -

First off I don't know what to call this or how it is done. I am looking for info weather it be a article write up or youtube video. I'd rather have a video I hate reading.

What do you call this? please see pic I attached. I think it's done with an actual photograph and they converted it to something like a cartoon but not quite. I am referencing the two guys doing a triangle in the picture.

I use Illustrator and I have photoshop I am not proficient in either but with a tutorial of some sort I'll eventually figure it out.

Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Photoshop Request

I have no experience what so ever with Photoshop etc, and I wanted to make a logo for our Instagram profile. I tried a few times but some horrible things came out. Hence I started looking on google and found this forum. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out.
I need a logo of the Galatasaray (soccer/football club) logo and the Dutch national flag mixed in a way. This is for a Dutch Galatasaray fan account.

Note that the Instagram profile picture is round.

Photoshop Cc Vs Photoshop Cs??

There's a lot of confusion about Adobe's new Creative Cloud.
It's assumed that all Adobe products will be available via a monthly subscription only, and that may be true.
I found this post by Scott Kelby, a Photoshop heavy weight.

My Adobe Creative Cloud Quick Q&A

Read the article and you'll see 2 comments that seem to contradict the subscription only assumption most people have.

Q. Do I have to sign-up for a Creative Cloud membership or can I just upgrade like always?
A. Nope—you can just upgrade like always.

Q. What if it’s not for me?
A. That’s totally cool. You can pretend the Creative Cloud doesn’t exist, and just pay up front for upgrades and full versions of the software like you used to. The Creative Cloud is an option — one that makes sense for a lot of people who can’t handle the up-front costs of the regular Creative Suite, but if it’s not for you, no biggie.

I'm posting this with very limited knowledge on how CC will work and what it means to those of us individuals that have single licenses for Adobe products.
I'm making this post a sticky and hope any PS_CC comments and updates will be posted here until we understand what this means to us.

Realistic Photomanipulation -what Areas Of Photoshop To Focus On?

Hi guys,

I'm really interested in learning realistic photomanipulations of characters (for example, taking a character from an image and compositing it seamlessly into another), but i've just started learning photoshop at the moment, so i was wondering if anyone could point me towards the right directions perhaps?

There's so many areas to learn when it comes to Photoshop, and due to the wide variety of art professional who use this software, surely some techniques or areas of photoshop are more relevant to certain type of artists- so when it comes to realistic photomanipulation, what areas of photoshop should i learn or focus on? and does anyone know of any good tutorials/guides/web sties/ or any learning resources they could recommend?

thanks in avance.
